Just as each culture has its own unique funeral rite, in South Korea there is a ceremony called ‘The Bonus Road’ that reflects the Korean sentiment. This unique funeral rite in Korea, which is rarely now seen in modern society, was reconsidered and reflected in the first project reflect on the meaning of why our ancestors carried out this funeral right. It is a performance where you can feel the sorrow and process of the Korean people who attend funerals together with the traditional Korean costume, Hanbok.

Sangrye / 상례 / the funeral rite

Sangrye is one of the most rigorous and important ceremonial rituals of South Korean traditions. It is a beautiful procedure dedicated to their ancestors to show respect while conveying they can rest in peace and comfort. The main motive of this project is one of the main parts of the Sangrye ritual, Sangyeogil. 301 Projects' modern dance movements are inspired by the reserved beauties of South Korean traditional Shamanism.

Sangyeo Gil / 상여길 is the path taken to carry the corpse from the home of the deceased to their physical resting place. On the road, the bearers of the palanquin mourn and appease the deceased leaving the physical world and its family and loved ones that are being left behind. The Sangyeogil is not only a funeral but it is a time for the deceased to get ready to enter the spiritual world. Sangyeo/ 상여 is the palanquin the deceased rides to move into the afterlife. It is considered to be the intermediate space for the physical body before moving on into the spiritual world. It is decorated with glittering colors and ornaments on every corner.
